Starting therapy can feel like a big step. Not knowing what to expect may make you feel reluctant to take that step. You might be wondering or worrying about what will happen, whether you’ll say the ‘right’ things or if it will feel uncomfortable.
Before Your First Session
Reaching out is often the hardest part. Once you have contacted me initially, we can arrange to have a free 15-minute introductory phone call to talk about what you hope for from therapy. This also gives you an opportunity to ask any questions. Following this, you can decide whether we feel like a good fit and whether you would like to continue the process. Some people, however, prefer to book straight in for their first in person or online session. It is completely your choice.
Once your first session is booked, I will send you a confirmation email with all the details you’ll need to know for your peace of mind.
What Happens in the First Session?
- A Warm Welcome
I will greet you and offer you a drink. We will then run through practical information such as where the waiting area and toilets are and then I’ll show you to the room.
- Talking About What Brings You to Therapy
We will talk about what’s been going on for you. There’s no pressure to cover everything in the first session. Some things you may not be ready to share, and that’s okay.
- Explaining How I Work and Initial Paperwork
I will explain how I work and what our sessions may look like.
We will then go through our contract which is simply an agreement we make when we decide to work together.
- Agreeing Next Steps
If it feels like a good fit, you can decide whether to continue and arrange future sessions.
What If I Don’t Know What to Say?
People often worry about what to say in their first session which is completely understandable. The main thing to remember is you don’t need to have it all figured out. I’m there to listen and support you to talk about what’s going on for you.
How Will I Feel Afterwards?
After the first session, people often feel:
- Relieved
- Calmer
- Emotionally tired
- Hopeful about getting support
However, there’s no ‘right’ reaction or way to feel, everyone’s experience is unique.
